The club is deeply saddened by the death of our close friend and sponsor Doug Andrews. Doug passed away peacefully at Bethlehem Hospital on Sunday, after spending the day surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Doug was closely associated with both the Boronia Junior Football and Cricket Clubs. He has sponsored the two clubs for some time and was responsible for extending the principles
of good sportsmanship in both codes by establishing a perpetual trophy for good sportsmanship.
One of Doug's many qualities was, he knew the importance of recognising players regardless of their natuarl talents or abilities. By presenting the "Wizard Good Sports" award, which eventually
became the "Aussie Boronia Good Sports" award, he knew that kids would feel they were recognised. The two clubs, both now have that trophy as part of their end of year presentation nights.
Doug always had an infectious personality and he inspired me one day in many of our catch-up conversations, about recognising players for their
willingness and good sports conduct and although some were less talented than others, to never forget they are the team.
Knowing Doug the way I did, he would have told the same to every other coach in the club. It moved me very significantly and its something that always pops in mind when I see a player do
the "old 1 percenter."
From all at the club, we send our sincere condolences to Jo and their extended families. Doug, we all know that both clubs and the families you made friends with, will all truly miss you...
